12 Tips for selecting a collection agency

  1. Is the agency an active member of the ACA International (National Association of Credit & Collection Specialists)?

  2. Find out how long the agency has been in business. Make sure the agency has been in business a while and has references.

  3. Does the agency abide by FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act) and FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act)?

  4. Is the agency licensed in the state in which you do business?

  5. Is the agency bonded? (If it is bonded, when an account is collected, it means the agency will remit the proceeds to the creditor.)

  6. There are times when agencies are asked to bid on business. Keep in mind that when you receive a low bid, generally you get what you pay for. A low bid does not mean that you are getting the most professional service; in most instances, it means the exact opposite.

  7. Look for an agency that has experience in collecting the type of accounts you intend to submit.

  8. Make sure the agency does not commingle bank accounts. When operational funds are commingled with client funds, the agency can use your revenue to pay bills or operate. Make sure your funds are placed in a separate client escrow account.

  9. Will the agency indemnify you from any actions they take?

  10. What type of reports will you receive from the agency. You should receive a monthly acknowledgement report as well as a performance report.

  11. Is the agency a complete accounts receivable management company? Do they handle accounts throughout the entire collection process into litigation?

  12. Are their collectors trained and certified?
